Why We Tested a New Skylight Coating on Our Own Roof Before Recommending It to a Client

July 6, 2026

At Boyd Bone Dry, one of our core values has always been simple:

We will never recommend a product to a client that we wouldn't confidently use on our own building or our own home.

Recently, we had the opportunity to put that philosophy into practice.

The Challenge

One of our commercial clients had experienced deterioration of the protective coating on translucent fiberglass skylight panels as part of a larger metal roof repair project.

Our original repair specification called for a Western Colloid skylight coating. Unfortunately, due to extended manufacturing delays and material availability issues, that product was unavailable within the timeframe needed to complete the project.

Rather than asking our client to simply "trust us" on a substitute, we decided to verify the alternative ourselves.

We Became the Test Project

Before applying the replacement product to our client's roof, we purchased GAF Sky-Lite Clear SEBS Coating and installed it on the skylights at our own Boyd Bone Dry office.

Why?

Because if we were going to stand behind the recommendation, we wanted firsthand experience with the product—not just a technical data sheet.

Our team prepared the surface exactly as we would on a customer's project and applied the GAF coating following the manufacturer's specifications.

The results exceeded our expectations.

One point of clarification. Our translucent panels were 40 year old fiberglass panels. And, Yes! We had not done pro-active maintenance on these panels. (The cobblers sons had no shoes….) They were not only perfect for a real life test. They were probably typical of many of the panels that will need this process. The actual job we were testing for included translucent panels that were just over 20 years old.

What We Like About the GAF System

After working with the product, several things immediately stood out:

  • Excellent application characteristics
  • Strong adhesion to weathered fiberglass skylight panels
  • Uniform, clean finish
  • High-quality professional-grade formulation
  • Immediate product availability without lengthy manufacturing delays

Perhaps most importantly, we walked away confident enough to say:

"If this were my own building, this is the product I would choose."

That level of confidence matters.

The Warranty Matters Too

One of the questions we receive most often is:

"If you're changing manufacturers, what happens to the warranty?"

GAF Sky-Lite is a professional-grade product manufactured by one of the most respected names in the roofing industry.

Like most roofing materials, warranty coverage depends on proper installation, substrate condition, and the manufacturer's published requirements. When installed in accordance with those requirements, the product provides the level of protection we expect from a professional commercial roofing solution.

Just as important, Boyd Bone Dry continues to stand behind the workmanship we perform on every project.

Real-World Experience Is Better Than Marketing

Manufacturers provide brochures.

They provide technical data.

They provide laboratory testing.

All of that is important.

But nothing replaces installing a product on your own building and watching it perform under the same Texas weather your clients experience every day.

That is exactly what we did.

Today, we're pleased with the performance we've seen and feel confident recommending the GAF Sky-Lite system as an excellent solution for protecting and sealing existing translucent fiberglass skylight panels.

Another Note: We gently cleaned our fiberglass panels---probably for the first time--and then we installed the GAF-Sky-Lite system. We have never had so much sunlight coming through those panels--a dynamic I had not expected!

Why It Matters

Our clients trust us to make recommendations that balance:

  • Performance
  • Longevity
  • Availability
  • Value

Sometimes the best recommendation isn't the product originally specified months earlier.

Sometimes it's the product that's available today, performs exceptionally well, and allows the project to move forward without sacrificing quality.

At Boyd Bone Dry, every recommendation starts with one question:

"Would we use it on our own roof?"

That’s how we’ve tried to do business for more than 50 years. If we wouldn’t trust it on our own roof, we’re not going to ask you to trust it on yours.
